The Karam Festival, one of the most significant tribal festivals dedicated to Karam Devta, the god of youth, strength, and fertility, was celebrated with devotion and cultural vibrancy at Don Bosco Loutolim, Goa on September 28, 2025. The festival, which usually falls during the harvest season, reflects the close relationship of the community with nature and their gratitude for its blessings.
Preparations began a few days in advance with the sowing of germinated seeds in small baskets, symbolizing fertility and prosperity. On the main day, the community gathered together in a spirit of unity and devotion. A branch of the sacred Karam tree was ceremoniously brought to the venue, decorated with flowers, vermillion, and offerings, and installed at the center of the hall. The Eucharistic celebration was celebrated by Father Suman Indwar SFX and con-celebrated by Father Kimrold Demello, Father Savio Dias, Father Ian Figueiredo, Father Nigel Pinto, Father Marvin Vaz and the parish priest Father Simon.
The man, women, and young girls sang melodious hymns throughout the celebration. Their voices, combined with the rhythmic beats of traditional drums and instruments, created a festive and devotional atmosphere. After the Eucharistic celebration, the entire community participated in spirited folk dances, performed in circles around the Karam branch. These dances, marked by graceful movements and the beating of drums, expressed joy, gratitude, and the bond of togetherness.
Cultural performances and community participation added to the vibrancy of the festival. The event was not only a spiritual observance but also a celebration of cultural identity. The Karam Festival at Don Bosco Loutolim thus became a memorable occasion that combined religious devotion with cultural expression. It fostered a deep sense of harmony within the community and highlighted the importance of preserving traditions that connect people to their roots and to nature.
